This twenty paise coin was introduced as a replacement for the earlier round-shaped brass twenty paise piece. The earlier coin was too heavy and costly to produce due to high inflation. This new coin was produced in aluminium and was shaped as a hexagon. On the obverse is the denomination and the year along with a floral border and on the reverse is the Ashoka Pillar.
